New literary sensation? Hundreds queue to meet Wayne Rooney as he signs copies of his new memoir...despite poor sales

Concentration: The Manchester United striker takes time to sign every fan's copy He might not be doing well in the bestsellers chart, but his new book is clearly a hit with his fans. Wayne Rooney was greeted by a sea of people as he signed copies of his autobiography at Selfridges in Manchester on Thursday. The Manchester United striker, who had celebrated his 27th birthday the day before, took it all in his stride as he was faced with hundreds of fans who had waited for hours to meet their idol.
Taking it in his stride: Wayne seems relaxed and calm as he's faced with a sea of fans Looking casual and approachable in a blue jeans and a navy jacket, the footballer sat calmly in the store's prime spot as a deluge of fans swarmed around him. Although fans of all ages turned up to the signing, most of those waiting were youngsters, who seemed overly excited at having the chance to chat to the England player. Stretching around the side of the building, the young fans were all decked out in Manchester football shirts. The book, My Decade in the Premiere League, details Wayne's prolific career in the ten years since he was signed to Everton aged 16.
Past decade: Wayne's book details the last ten years of his career, since he was signed by Everton at 16 Wayne and his publishers HarperCollins are currently in the middle of a desperate publicity drive after the book failed to gain momentum in the charts and has reportedly only sold around 6,000 copies. He might have his loyal fans, but there has been a severe lack of interest for the autobiography when it was released a few weeks ago.
Relaxed: Wayne dressed down as he greeted his young fans at Selfridges Wayne had a sophisticated night out in Manchester for his birthday the evening before the signing. This means that the future of Wayne's £5m five book deal with the publisher might be in jeopardy. The book is released in the same month as a number of other celebrity autobiographies in the run up to the Christmas bestseller list battle. Stars including Miranda Hart, David Mitchell, Rod Stewart, David Walliams and Cheryl Cole all have new books out which will be vying for the number one spot.
